The Queen’s Birthday weekend turned out to be a really exciting few days down at Rotorua as I was racing in the Secondary Schools Multisport National Championships. We woke up to an overcast but warm Sunday morning down at the race start at Lake Okareka. The kayak was the first discipline of our 25km multisport race. It was a mass start in the water with about 150 starters across the 25km, 50km multisport and the 8km kayak events. It was great as we got to start alongside some of the BIG names, Richard Ussher, Elina Ussher, Dougal Allan and Mike Walker.
I was trailing the first girl by 50 seconds as I got out of my kayak but within the first transition I was already hot on her tail. The mountain bike course was a stunning 15km ride in the Redwood Forest with a challenging terrain. After 55 minutes of mountain biking, I had made it to the second transition down by the information centre in the Redwood Forest. Next we went through a very demanding 6km run course that just kept going up and up and up. During the event I had no idea where the other competitors in my age group were but I knew I just had to focus on what was ahead of me and the fastest way to the finish line.
I finished in a tremendous winning time of 1 hour and 48 minutes, nearly 12 minutes in front of the next female competitor. I also managed to place 11th in the boy’s race.
It was awesome to finally meet Richard and Elina Ussher who are also sponsored by SUBWAY. Both took out the 50km multisport race. I was really inspired by their performances and I am really looking forward to racing next year and beating my course record time.

Quotes
Pain is temporary, it may last one minute, one hour or one day but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. However if I quit, it lasts forever!!
